Question:
Sony or Canon, and once that, which body?
History:
- Currently mostly shoot phone, also occasionally a Rebel XTi that I have had for a long time, I have two lenses for it (EF and EFS style) that are not worth making my decision based on.
- Though I love this thing, the low resolution sensor and other tech features that have been developed in the last 20 years have made it dated and obsolete
- Long history with photography and am just looking to up my game and get back into it
Budget/Price considerations, and why I chose these brands:
- 5k-7k is the range for the options I have priced out, where I fall on that kind of determines what glass I get immediately vs. save for in the future.
- I am looking at this from the perspective of buying for life, and remaining in that ecosystem generally (unless there is a ridiculous tech breakthrough somewhere)
- Due to that, immediate costs are a concern, but so is an eventual ceiling and future purchases.
- More money now on a body means fewer lenses, less money on a body means more lenses. I would be looking at high-ish tier lenses for all of them, but I would also like to be able to start with a body and lens I don’t feel the need to upgrade sooner
- Brand choice was largely due to size and stability of the company, and tendency for innovation. I am most confident in these two lasting a long time, and they push the boundaries of the tech constantly.
Main Use Cases:
- Mostly adventure and travel photography so:
- lots of hiking, will be doing some backpacking so weight is a consideration in (some) of the kit.
- road tripping so landscapes and also city/people/architecture
- Flight based travel (pared down lenses)
- Not Doing:
- Portrait work
- Event work
- Trying to make a living off of photography
- Features I want
- Good AP camera for now, can be used for both landscape and animals
- Wireless backup features (somehow)
Brand Considerations:
Canon:
Pro:
- Familiar with the ecosystem and controls/feel of the cameras
